No. 3 Saio-Ga-Uma

Colour woodblock print of Iris No. 3 Saio-Ga-Uma from volume II of the Yokohama nursery catalogue of Seitaro Arai which specialised in Iris kaempferi. The Yokohama nurseries supplied catalogues of plants for sale overseas. There is evidence to suggest that towards the end of the 19th century they began to trade collectively as one company. Dated c.1890s.

'Passiflora. Lautifolia. Gynandria'

Watercolour on vellum illustration of Passiflora laurifolia by Margaret Meen dated 1785. Meen was born in Bungay, Suffolk, England. She travelled to London to teach flower painting and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1775-1785. A book containing her work titled 'Exotic plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew' was published in 1790.

Plate 232, Vol I

Hand-coloured engraved plate entitled 'Ixia capitata var. stellata' by Henry Andrews from 'The Botanist's Repository, for New, and Rare Plants' published by Andrews between 1797-1812. Andrews was a botanical artist and engraver living in Knightsbridge, London. His published works also include books on Heaths and Geraniums. He was the son-in-law of John Kennedy (1759-1842) a partner at the Vineyard Nursery in Hammersmith who supplied plants to Empress Josephine.
