Cover of the 1909-1910 Späth nursery catalogue. Founded in 1720 by Christoph Späth the nursery relocated in 1869 when Franz Ludwig Späth (1839 - 1913) became manager. Following L. Späth's death his son Hellmut took over and went on to gain valuable landscaping contracts from the Nazi party. His subsequent criticism of the Nazi regime led to his imprisonment and execution in 1945

Their bulbs and plants were shipped worldwide from the nurseries in Japan. The plants are named on the illustration as Diospyros lotus and Pyrus serotina'. There is a hand-written note that Prices subject to a 20% increase

No. 5 Uji-No-Kawagiri
Colour woodblock print of Iris No. 5 Uji-No-Kawagiri from volume II of the Yokohama nursery catalogue of Seitaro Arai which specialised in Iris kaempferi. The Yokohama nurseries supplied catalogues of plants for sale overseas. There is evidence to suggest that towards the end of the 19th century they began to trade collectively as one company. Dated c.1890s
