Hand-coloured printed lithograph entitled Lilac, lithographed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) after an original by Valentine Bartholomew (1799-1879). From Bartholomew's 'A Selection of Flowers Adapted Principally for Students', published in London by R. Ackermann in 1821-1822. Bartholomew's book includes 36 hand-coloured lithographs and is one of the first works to employ lithography for botanical illustration. Plate [23]

Watercolour and pencil on paper of Paeonia Bakeri by Lilian Snelling. Snelling worked as a botanical artist at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh from 1916 to 1921. She provided the illustrations for many books including 'A Supplement to Elwes' Monograph of Genus Lilium' (1933-40) as well as for Curtis's Botanical Magazine from 1922-52

Watercolour on vellum by James Bolton inscribed 'James Bolton pinxit, Stannary near Halifax'. Bolton was born in West Yorkshire, England and was the son of a weaver. He was a self- taught botanist, artist and engraver. His brother Thomas Bolton (1722-1778) was also a naturalist. James Bolton was highly successful as a mycologist and author of several botanical books including the first British book on fungi. James and Thomas Bolton were both sponsored by the art and natural history collector Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland (1715-1785). Painting date c.1790s
